La compañía de whisky escocés Ardbeg ha protagonizado un experimento de investigación pionero, con la creación de la primera destilería "espacial".
Un vial de Ardbeg entrará en la atmósfera terrestre el próximo viernes después de casi tres años orbitando el planeta a bordo de la Estación Espacial Internacional, ha explicado la firma hoy en una nota.
La expedición permitirá a los científicos descifrar el impacto que tiene la gravedad en el proceso de maduración del whisky.
Tras haber despegado de la Tierra en 2011, el espíritu de la isla de Islay, en Escocia, "ha estado en un viaje galáctico destinado a cambiar la industria del whisky para siempre", ha añadido la firma.
Especialmente diseñado para la misión, el vial de Ardbeg ha estado orbitando la atmósfera de la Tierra a 17.227 millas por hora, 15 veces al día durante 1.045 días.
Al mismo tiempo, un vial idéntico tenía un viaje un poco más fácil al guardarse en el almacén número 3 en la destilería de Ardbeg para actuar como muestra de control.
Ahora las dos muestras se reunirán en un laboratorio en Houston (Texas) para un experimento que los investigadores creen que podría cambiar el futuro de la producción del whisky.
"Los científicos compararán las dos muestras, examinando la interacción de las moléculas de Ardbeg creadas en roble carbonizado para documentar las diferencias que se producen entre el whisky", ha puntualizado la compañía en el mismo comunicado.
"Este es un pequeño paso para el hombre, pero un gran salto para el mundo del whisky, y el equipo tiene la esperanza de descubrir cómo los sabores se desarrollan en diferentes condiciones gravitatorias. Hallazgos que podrían revolucionar el proceso de elaboración del whisky", ha comentado el director de la Destilería y creador del whisky Ardbeg, Bill Lumsden.
El single malt aterrizará en Kazajstán a bordo del cohete Soyuz el viernes próximo antes de ser transportado a Houston "para comenzar el análisis de su odisea espacial".
El estudio pionero comenzó cuando las muestras de las moléculas elaboradas de Ardbeg despegaron de la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS) en la nave rusa Progress 45 de carga no tripulada.
La nave espacial fue lanzada a través de un cohete Soyuz el 30 de octubre de 2011 en el Cosmódromo de Baikonur en Kazajstán y se acopló con los astronautas en la Estación Espacial Internacional el de 2 de noviembre de ese mismo año.
El libro blanco final con los resultados de la investigación completa se publicará en 2015 una vez que se hayan completado todas las pruebas.
Para celebrar el viaje de Ardbeg, la destilería ha utilizado una nueva expresión de su single malt más turbado: "el súper codiciado y aún más vendido Supernova", llamado así por la "explosión súper brillante" de una estrella.
